From the moment I saw The River Cafe I knew I was going to be obsessed. Tucked right along the water under the Brooklyn Bridge, it’s one of those venues that instantly feels magical. Cocktail hour on the deck was such a dream with guests sipping drinks while overlooking the skyline and the river below. Inside, the reception space is wrapped in glass, so everywhere you turn there’s a new stunning view of the city. I loved getting to capture the reflections of the skyscrapers in the windows as well as Crystal and Cooper happily chatting with their guests. It was so artistic and different from a typical wedding day.

I love couples portraits because it’s a time during the day that is just for the couple. It’s a time where couples get to soak it all in and I am there to make sure that time goes smoothly and we find perfect spots to sneak away for photos. In Crystal and Cooper’s case some of those photos included epic views of the city skyline. The skyline adds both depth and a cinematic feel to photos that are already magical to begin with.

There’s just something about editorial speckled light photos that have such a vibe. Crystal and Cooper’s wedding was the perfect time to lean into this, the way the light created little pockets of highlights and shadows. Sometimes it’s fun to just give into the light and let it fall where it wants. These photos ended up being some of my absolute favorites from the day. Editorial photos like this are ones that you could see in a magazine but still capture the emotions of the day.

There’s just something about direct flash during cake cutting that I really love. It’s bold, exciting and creates an upbeat, joy filled group of photos. Cake cutting can go from sweet to savage in two seconds, and direct flash captures every second of it. I love watching my couples interact during the cake cutting. The stress of the day has worn off and they have such genuine reactions and smiles during these photos.
