What is a styled shoot

I had the absolute pleasure of going to Lake Como this past October. I got to partake in a workshop with other photographers from all over the world. One of my favorite styled shoots from the workshop was this absolutely magical boat session. If you’re not sure what a styled shoot is, it’s when vendors come together to create a “wedding day”.  This can include makeup artists, hair stylists, dress designers, venues, florists, photographers and more. Styled shoots let vendors showcase what their best at without having guidelines normally set in place by couples.

For this particular shoot we happened to be in the stunning Lake Como on a boat. Normally at a styled shoot the couples pictured are models which is nice for a photographer. When comfortable in front of a camera we can pose models in ways we might usually stray from on a wedding day with couples who are not as comfortable getting photos taken.

Taking photos of models and having the ability to post them online means couples get to look at them. This helps them get a feel for posing and what poses they will be comfortable with on the big day. On this day we were extra lucky because our models were also a couple in real life. This only heightens the beauty of these photos. While photos with strictly models are always breathtaking, having a couple in love really heightens the warmth and feelings that the photos exude. 

Taking part in a styled shoot is always exciting for vendors as we get full creative control over it.  For this particular shoot I got to work alongside some of the most incredible vendors. From Studio Como for hair and makeup to Garden of Love who supplied florals. Vendors supply everything down to the jewelry worn at styled shoots. In this case, the stunning earrings were supplied by Megan Therese, shoes by Jimmy Choo, dress by Ines di Santo, and the breathtaking ring was supplied by the incredible Andria Bar.

I certainly cannot miss the chance to give a shoutout and thank you to the amazing AMV Retreats. It was honor to be able to take part in this unforgettable workshop. The boat capsule being just one of many gorgeous locations I was able to photograph on the trip. I learned a lot about myself as a photographer while there and made relationships that I will cherish forever. I hope you all enjoy taking in these photos as I did capturing them!
